I’m excited about it! I’m excited about getting the music videos right for the singles coming out and getting this tour right. Yeah, the new album we recorded will come out around April or May. If you’ve started to think about it already, do you have plans for the new upcoming record? And then it became this thing where my girlfriend and I would always write back to each other with something like, “The June Carter to your Johnny Cash.” So it spawned from my love of Johnny Cash as an artist and then we brought it together. That’s the image I’ve always wanted to uphold and embody and it would always be something I would really talk about. That was sort of the vibe and image and I’m sure that’s how a lot of other young musicians feel. Well I’m sure it’s more of a legend, but I think for me, I always wanted to be a young Johnny Cash.
What is it about June Carter and Johnny Cash’s relationship you admire?
My parents live out on a horse farm and I have a great set-up in the city so in between I write a lot, I spend a lot of time in the city, I work on the farm a little bit, just have little moments to myself for relaxing, see shows. If you get any time off, what do you do when you’re not on the music grind? He made “Midnight” the Hottest Record in the World on BBC and then did “Carter and Cash” on Beats 1 so I feel like he’s a massive supporter and I’m so thankful for everything he’s done. He was the first person to ever play a song of mine on the radio, which was an iphone recording. Yes! You know, Zane’s been a huge supporter of my songs so I owe a lot to him. Zane Lowe called one of your tracks the “ Hottest Record In the World,” how was that? I mean, there were weird experiences that definitely happened along the way but I was so excited to be playing in general it sort of all had a mystical aura to it, even though they were these dive-y bars on the shore and stuff. Was it weird playing at bars when you were so young starting out? Yeah, I have a band together now so now that’s the song where I get to stand up and be the frontman which I always used to do as a teenager so it’s kind of fun. They were in Paris one day and we were looking to release a 7 inch with a small label here in New York and Chris was asking for advice from Daniel Glass who was like, “We’ll sign him,” and then they shook on it and now here we are with a 3-album deal.Ī lot of your songs are great piano ballads and “Carter and Cash” is a little more upbeat, does that change your stage set-up when you play live now? Chris, my manager, represents Phoenix so they already had a relationship. Pretty much what happened was we were playing residencies in the city a lot and labels were coming out and then eventually Daniel Glass came out of Glassnote Records. He came and booked me a show in the city at Pianos, which i’m going to be playing tonight! I haven’t played since I was 17 so that’ll be a lot of fun. Eventually the band broke up and I went to college and I was playing around still and I met my manager through a family member. I was in a band in high school and I was playing around and I became our manager as well, booked the shows and did everything. Just sort of over-the-top and let the song speak for itself. Sort of mainly to not look like an asshole, but on top of that we’re kind of thinking we wanted to have a Dazed and Confused vibe to it, come up with something that wasn’t too conceptual. Your most recent music video is for “Carter and Cash,” what was the idea behind it? Yeah, it was fun! Just some radio promo, shaking hands, kissing babies. Read on to learn more about the artist taking the world by storm with upbeat tunes like “ Carter & Cash” that show off his killer vocals as well as nostalgic odes to the city life like “ Midnight”, earning him a “Hottest Record in the World” title from Zane Lowe last year.
